The Four Classic Fisherman's Knots

Turle Knot

For attaching an eyed fly to the end of a leader.

1. Thread leader through eye of fly. Then holding a loop open, the leader on itself with an ordinary "granny" knot.
[Turle 1]
2. Bring open loop forward over the fly.
[Turle 2]
3. Pull on leader 'til loop closes, tight behind the eye of the fly.
[Turle 3]

Perfection Loop

To make a loop on the end of leader or monofilament line.

1. Take 1-1/2 turns around the line.
[Perfection 1]
2. Bring end through between the forward and back loops of turn taken in step 1.
[Perfection 2]
3. The back loop formed in step 1 is then pulled up through the front loop, and pulled tight.
[Perfection 3]

Barrel Knot

For attaching tippet to leader, or connecting two monofilament lines.

[Barrel Knot]

  1. Give end of line 1 at least three turns around line 2, and bring end back through loop as illustrated.
  2. Give end of line 2 same number of turns around line 1 (in reverse rotation) and bring back through loop (in opposite direction).
  3. While holding both line ends, pull twists firm and tight against each other. Ends can be trimmed very close, giving a neat smooth look.

Improved Clinch Knot

For attaching eyed fly or attaching spinning lure to monofilament.

[Improved Clinch Knot 1]
[Improved Clinch Knot 2]

  1. Thread line through eye.
  2. Give line at least five turns around itself, then bring end back throught the loop.
  3. While holding line end, pull the twists tight up against the eye.
