Fishing The Miramichi River and Its Tributaries Southwest Miramichi: produces more Salmon consistently throughout the angling season than any of its tributaries. Its major runs are in July & August depending on water conditions. Southwest River: trickles from hills above Juniper & flows Northeast through N.B. for some 220 miles before emptying into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Northwest Miramichi: produces most fish in June & early July, brights enter as early as Mid May. Dungarvon: is an early stream--easy to reach. Most consistent smaller salmon river in the province. Renous: is a late June & July river & also produces a respectable fall run. Cains: is a late run, Sept to Oct 15. Village of Howard for canoe exists. Bartibog: is barren of salmon until late Oct but it has a respectable trout fishery throughout the summer. Southwest: has only a small number of public water pools Little Southwest: has plenty of public water available Sevogle: lots of salmon pools which are public. Note: obtain river maps from ranger stations along the Miramichi, Nashaak trail #8. shows public waters and waterways. Sea Run Speckled Trout or brook trout native to the Miramichi move in spring down river to the estuary, feed heavy, become fat and bright. Late May & June begin their return to the headwaters where they spawn late in the fall. Unlike salmon, they continue to feed. Like salmon, the male trout grows a hook or kype on its lower jaw as spawning time nears. They are quite ferocious; at this time, trout will strike fiercely at large streamers & frequently cannibalize their own eggs. June: Match the hatch..mayflies size & colour, green or brown drake. Late June: Cains, Jungarvon & Renous are excellent for trout fishing & generally 10 degrees colder than the Miramichi (during dry months). Trout seek temps below 68 degrees..... |
